Sunol Alvar was born in the Catalan coastal village of Montgat near Barcelona in 1935. He started painting oils at the age of 12, and at 17 was accepted at the Escuela Superior de Belles Artes in Barcelona. During this period, the museum of Modern Art in Barcelona acquired one of his paintings for its permanent collection. He was given his first one-man show in Barcelona in 1957. In the following year, he received a scholarship to the Institut Francais to study in Paris. After an outstanding one-man show in paris in 1963, he has exhibited regularly throughout Europe, the United States, Canada and Japan. In 1978, the Musee Hyacinthe Rigaud in Perpignan, France held a retrospective exhibition of his lithographs. His lithographs, paintings and sculpture have been presented in major shows throughout the world, and museums across the globe have acquired his work for their permanent collections.
